About two years ago a project was started to revitalize the primary sector in Zeberio. This project aims to promote a sustainable way of life, a healthy diet, and a lively and dynamic environment. It is interesting to note that the initial motivation was not only to address the socio-economic and food production aspects, but also to understand the history of the municipality.
Thus a brainstorming process began in which a puzzle was developed with ideas of the direction we wanted to go in, it also took into account what resources were available. In order to do this, we were fortunate to have very powerful people and stakeholders nearby. These people are fundamental in terms of understanding the path that has been evolving over the years.
Five parts of the proposal were identified: multi-functional building, land, revitalization of the primary sector, responsible consumption and production, and opportunities for young people.
The Nekazalgunea project was born.
We began to think about building a space for revitalising the first sector and we defined three main pillars of the project: land, housing and a space for transformation and exchange.
With regard to land, and given that the municipality had hardly any land available for production, negotiations were held with the Board of Trustees to transfer some of its land under a model mandate contract. In other words, land management is left to the municipality for a period of 10 years, and the municipality is responsible for its correct use.
The so-called Ermitabarri building was converted into an apartment building.
The so-called Ermitabarri building was converted into apartments and a collective space. For the apartments, it was proposed to set an accessible price so that some of them could be occupied by those who started their productive activity. On the ground floor, there was a space for collective use and for exchange. There is currently a project underway to produce food in an agro-ecological and collective manner, "Maskilu Kontserbak". We can say that this is the basis of the project on which other very interesting dynamics have been taking place, such as the processes of training and exchange through conferences, the revival of traditional memory regarding the conservation of seeds (referenced documentary), the generation of networks and community activities, or the search for links between the primary sector and tourism. There are proposals such as Etnogune which. among other factors, incorporates the proposal of food sovereignty into its identity.
