2015
After signing the Mayors' Pact, Errenteria Town Council drew up the Sustainable Energy Action Plan in 2015. Subsequently, in July 2018, theMonitoring and updating of Errenteria's Sustainable Energy Action Plan was approved, made up of a total of 80 actions spread over 8 strategic lines:
- Waste: In order to reduce GHG emissions linked to the decomposition of organic matter, different waste management systems are analysed so that less waste is sent to landfill. In addition, different awareness campaigns will be organised in order to minimise the generation of waste.
- Natural environment: increase of trees on land used for agriculture and livestock. Also, actions on forest plantations, so that with the passage of time they become naturalised. The aim is to expand CO2 sinks.
- Primary sector: Agricultural and livestock activities are sources of GHG emissions. These emissions could be reduced, for example, by approving a Municipal Regulatory Ordinance for the use of livestock in the Añarbe communal forest or by favouring conventional agriculture.
- Mobility: The main source of emissions is the use of fossil fuels linked to transport. Therefore, the objective must be focused on the promotion of sustainable means of transport instead of private vehicles, such as the use of bicycles and pedestrian mobility. Furthermore, the use of biofuels and electric vehicles, as well as the provision of efficient driving instruction can complement the package of measures in this area.
- Water: Water consumption is linked to GHG emissions, due to the energy expenditure of each of the phases of the water cycle (collection, adduction, purification, distribution, use, and reuse). In order to reduce this consumption, which in turn reduces emissions, measures can be taken such as: improving the distribution network, installing flow reducers, purchasing low water consumption appliances or organising awareness-raising campaigns.
- Energy efficiency: The aim of this strategic line is to reduce the consumption of electricity and fossil fuels, either by reducing demand or by making efficient use thereof. In order to reduce demand, automatic switch-off systems can be installed and awareness campaigns organised. To ensure efficient use certain action could be taken. For example, certain buildings could be renovated or lighting systems or boilers could be replaced by more efficient ones.
- Renewable energies: The use of renewable energies reduces the consumption of fossil fuels and, consequently, GHG emissions. The City Council has an exemplary role to play by, for example, installing solar thermal or photovoltaic panels, as well as encouraging the purchase of electricity from renewable sources.
