The Council of Pamplona / Iruña signed the Pact of Milan in 2016 committing itself to work for the defence of biodiversity, as well as for a more sustainable food system connected with short circuits and zero kilometres. As a direct consequence, this model has positive implications for the local economy, health, food culture and the agro-ecosystem itself.
Following the signing of this Pact, the Pamplona-Iruña City Council is launching the "Hemengoak - De Aquí" Project, under which different actions and strategies related to a more sustainable food system are included, including the transformation of the menus of the Municipal Children's Schools. This project is part of the City Council's commitment to food sustainability, in line with a socially responsible public procurement system and a pedagogical project in which food is granted a significant position.
The project has been conducted in two children's schools (Hello Buztintxuri and Donibane) with the aim of proposing a menu based on the following priority criteria: locally produced, fresh, seasonal, organic and directly purchased from producers through a public procurement process.
The assessment of this experimental project is entirely positive and we are in a public tender process to extend these menus to all municipal nursery schools.
