The Banco de Tierras is an intermediation centre created by the Consejo Comarcal del Bierzo, whose purpose is to use land for agriculture, livestock or forestry.
It is a fundamental instrument for the reactivation of the regional agricultural economy, taking also into account the benefits provided in the environmental and tourism fields.
Objectives include:
- To halt the loss of useful agricultural land and to recover abandoned arable land for agricultural, forestry, livestock or beekeeping use, so as to increase its economic viability.
To avoid the serious situation of abandonment of some lands with the consequent risk of fires, damages to surrounding areas, etc.. - Encourage the establishment of new farmers and the incorporation of young people into the agri-food sector and into association and grouping initiatives, so as to restore agricultural activity in areas affected by an ageing population and rural exodus. Wealth and employment can thus be created in order to reactivate the local economy.
- Encourage greater competitiveness in the sector.
- To develop the consideration of agriculture and stockbreeding as a strategic sector.
- Encourage the implementation of marketing channels. Through the commercial advice that allows to open commercial relations with the objective of obtaining the greater economic yield of its production.
- Promote the signing of agreements with companies, entities, associations, consumer platforms, supply markets, fairs, etc. to distribute such products.
- Develop training actions.
- Promote complementary activities to the agricultural sector such as transformation activities, those related to the conservation of the natural space and protection of the environment, tourist and craft activities, etc.
- Promote associationism.
- Promote the development of an environmentally sustainable agriculture.
