Before signing the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact in October 2015, the local government had already assumed as its own the message that organised civil society launched in November 2014 with the Charter for Food Sovereignty from our Municipalities.
With the perspective of a territory, agricultural and fishing heritage, such as Horta de València and La Albufera, and the drive of citizens' struggles to defend them, since 2015 projects and actions have been implemented and they require a city agro-food strategy that gives them coherence and guarantees a coordinated framework for the food policies to be promoted in the coming years. Thus, in 2017, the elaboration of a first strategic impulse document was initiated with the aim of participating and working within the framework of the Municipal Food Council, a body that will have to define and approve the Agro-Food Strategy of the city of Valencia. In June 2018 this Council was constituted; the consultation and participation process was detailed and the axes, values and transversal principles of this strategy were presented, focusing on
-
Promote changes in the agri-food culture towards more socially and environmentally responsible models.
-
To promote the agro-ecological transition in agricultural, livestock and fishing production systems.
-
Relocate the food economy to generate fairer value chains.
-
Consolidate participatory and transparent local food governance.
-
To guarantee the right to sustainable food through the action of the administrations and civil society, prioritizing the groups at risk of social exclusion, and
-
Develop territorial planning that incorporates the agri-food perspective.
