Ekolapiko started out in late 2006 as a project aiming at including environment-friendly, healthy food using locally sourced produce from nearby farmhouses in school canteens.
Ekolapiko, in collaboration with the San Sebastian town council, worked with three of the city's haurreskolas (nurseries), and the project then was expanded to other towns and school centres in Usurbil, Beasain, Hernani, Oiartzun, Errenteria and Ibarra. The Segura hostel also joined the project. After an initial time period, all centres had an overall positive impression of the project; both in terms of the quality of food and the relationship they have with the producers. Today, the project is in place in seven municipalities and an average of 675 environment-friendly meals are produced each day.
Ekolapiko is a comprehensive and transversal project that is rooted in responsibility – not only because it looks after the health of young children, but also because it works towards safeguarding the environment and local rural development. Its work will boost local organic food production and allow producers and distributors to become better organised. A good diet is key for children's growth. The group has set itself the objective of making sure that the school children's diets are varied, balanced and include seasonal produce. What is more, the group educates parents by using magazines, information meetings, cooking classes and visits to farms.
