The local farmer's markets (mercats de pagès) of the Baix Llobregat are markets organized in nine municipalities of this region, where you can buy directly and without intermediaries the fresh product of the Baix Llobregat Agricultural Park.
The Agricultural Area of the Baix Llobregat is located to the west of Barcelona, 10 minutes from the city centre and, specifically, in the lower valley and delta of the Llobregat River. It is an area with a long tradition of fruit and vegetable growing which, for many centuries, has been the main supplier of fresh fruit and vegetables to the city of Barcelona. The Agricultural Park, with an agricultural surface area of 2,938 hectares, is the last remaining redoubt of agricultural space in the immediate surroundings of Barcelona, made up of land belonging to 14 municipalities in which around 700,000 inhabitants live. In 1998 two local administrations (the Diputació de Barcelona and the Consell Comarcal del Baix Llobregat) and a professional agricultural organisation, the Unió de Pagesos (Union of Farmers), the majority in Catalonia, together with the 14 municipalities with agricultural land in the area of the Agricultural Park, constituted the Consortium of the Agricultural Park.
The objective of the Baix Llobregat Agricultural Park is to consolidate the presence of farmers (both men and women) in the territory and make it possible to keep peri-urban agricultural areas alive.
