Nekasarea is a network of consumer groups that was part of the EHNE-Bizkaia trade union in 2005. This network promotes direct relations between consumers and food producers through autonomous consumption groups without intermediaries. The involvement of its members is consequently sought when it comes to mutual commitment in both production and consumption. The people who make up these groups offer/receive seasonal food produced locally and in an agro-ecological way, allowing for better mutual knowledge that recognises the work of farmers whom are referred to as "baserritarras".
Nekasarea is a network based on the shared responsibility of these baserritarras and consumers interested in regaining control of how they feed themselves.
A baserritarra person commits himself/herself to delivering a weekly "basket" of products previously agreed upon between them and the consumer. The consumer commits him/herself to an agreed time to collect and pay for the basket. Consumers are organized into "groups" and are coordinated by one person, mostly baserritarras who produce some of the products in the basket. In addition, assemblies are held, baseterras receive visitors and relations between people are restored. This creates an alliance that reestablishes the link between the countryside and the city.
