Bilbao City Council has launched the Bilbao Sustainable Energy Action Plan (PAES), with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30.8% by 2020 in relation to 2005 levels.
The main lines of action around which it is structured are:
- Axis 1: Energy efficiency
Intervention in this area - both in municipal facilities and in the residential and services sectors - enables 17% of greenhouse gas emission reductions.
- Axis 2: Sustainable mobility
Acting both on the fleet of the City Council itself and on the habits of citizens and the transport of goods, we can achieve 18% of reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.
- Axis 3: Renewable energies
In this case, action is taken both in City Council buildings and in the residential and services sectors, thereby achieving 1% of greenhouse gas emission reductions.
- Axis 4: Waste generation and management
This axis acts both on the habits of citizens and on the optimisation of the subsequent treatment of solid urban waste, which makes it possible to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 49% by 2020 with respect to 2005 emissions.
- Axis 5: Water
Improvements in distribution networks and changes in certain habits make it possible to achieve 15% of the greenhouse gas reductions planned for 2020.
- Axis 6: Natural environment
The actions on this axis, which are mainly based on the creation and maintenance of a green ring around the Villa, do not involve significant reductions (0.1%), but they do provide a notable improvement in the urban environment.
The implementation of all the measures envisaged in the above-mentioned axes will make it possible to avoid around 251,427 tonnes of CO2 by 2020, which represents a 30.8% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to 2005.
