The municipality of Ames has about 30,000 registered people and is one of the municipalities that is increasing its population the most (about 1000 people register each year).
In 2004, there were three educational centres, of which only one had a school canteen managed by the AMPA. For this reason, many children went to school in Santiago de Compostela. In that year, the City Council decided to take charge of the school canteen service (which until then was the responsibility of the Xunta de Galicia/Galician Regional Government). At that time, a company of facilitators was hired and the food was bought from a local restaurant.
In 2005-2006, the municipal network of school canteens was created with two school canteens. It was decided to cook, and to cook with municipal staff in a kitchen from which the transfer was made. It began providing its services to 300 students.
In the academic year 2015-2016, there were already 5 canteens, another kitchen was set up and 1112 children are served.
The network of canteens was born with two objectives:
- Helping citizens to balance work and family life
- Educate for health, promoting healthy eating habits, providing a healthy diet. For example, almost no fryers are used, but rather steam ovens are used.
Since 2009 there is a municipal nutritionist who prepares the menus. These are published on the website and a dinner proposal is made (depending on what has been eaten at school). This allows the menus to be adapted to local production and, therefore, to seasonal products. In addition, the basic menu is adapted to children with special needs (allergies, intolerances, etc.).
