The Rufea Farmers' Nursery is an innovative project that responds to the need to support people who see agricultural activity as a career opportunity.
Through the nursery, the entrepreneurs will be able to access the use of an agricultural plot of 1-2 ha (variable, depending on the project) for the cultivation of vegetables or other annual crops, which includes the main irrigation network, the pumping group and the water. There is also a warehouse for tools and advice on organic production.
Lessons learned and recommendations:
-
In addition to increased production, the product needs to be marketed, and this is an important issue where new farmers need guidance and support.
-
Access to land is a key factor, and requires medium-term planning and a wide range of skills from new farmers. To meet the initial costs (investment, but also to register as self-employed), they can be organized in cooperatives or in parallel coordination and support structures, at least during the first years.
