The "Monte Vecinal en Mancomún de Couso" is a community management entity that has promoted an ambitious project to eliminate invasive species such as eucalyptus or acacia from its territory. The community has established agreements with Verdeval, a land stewardship association for the recovery of degraded areas, and with the University of Vigo, for the elimination of invasive species.
It is also a pioneer in diversifying the uses of the mountain. They grow products in high demand on the market, such as raspberries, blueberries or Shiitake mushrooms, which also have greater added value than traditional forest products.
More than 5 years ago, the community of Couso started to gradually replace the forest mass of pyrophilic species, by species such as chestnut trees or oaks. The community of Couso hopes to start collecting chestnuts and selling them soon, a product that is in great demand.
In 2019, this project has been included in the ICCA International Register, a voluntary worldwide UN registry of areas or territories conserved by local communities.
