ONDARROA 12 MILIA is an organization composed of people related to the fishing sector, marine research, teaching and social activism. In their effort to preserve the activity of artisanal fishing and the socialization of its cultural value, they have organized and energized days of debate on fishing policies and are promoters of the "Declaration of Ondarroa".
In recent years, the association ONDARROA 12 MILIA, is requesting a change in fishing policy to achieve the objective of sustainable fishing activity. In our opinion, if we want fishing to have a future, it is essential not only to guarantee the survival of the biomass of different marine species but also to preserve their ecosystems.
In order to do this, we need to change the fisheries policy. We believe that in order to make the recovery of many of the species in our fishing grounds possible, it is necessary to create marine reserves protected from fishing activity, as well as to promote sustainable fishing that will last over time in other areas. In our opinion, it is essential that within the 12 nautical miles of jurisdictional waters only vessels with artisanal fishing gear are allowed to fish, moving industrial predatory gear offshore.
