This is a project promoted by l´Associació of the Producció Agrària Ecològica de Mallorca (Apaema), with the collaboration of Amics de la Terra, which managed to introduce fresh and environmentally friendly products in more than 25 primary schools in Mallorca, feeding approximately 2,000 students.
It took place during 2010, 2011 and 2013, and was based on the substitution of conventional food with food produced in an ecological manner. This was carried out either on a one-off or continuous basis, based on a prior agreement between the producer and the school or caterers. It did not require a change in the price of the menu.
The objectives of this initiative were:
- To promote the consumption of local, ecologically produced and seasonal food. To also promote direct sale, which favours the maintenance of small farmers and, consequently, of the environment and the landscape.
- To help promote a healthy and balanced diet within schools that has an impact on the health of girls and boys.
- Achieve a close relationship between peasants and schools (students, parents, teachers and kitchen staff).
- To improve the organisation of horticulturists in Mallorca with regard to the production and distribution of their products.
